A speeding motorist has been fined £1365 and given 6 penalty points after being
charged with and found guilty of excessive speeding.
Norren Emmans, 63, a lecturer from Herne Bay
received a court summons after she was caught by a safety camera van
driving at 100mph on the A2 at Womenswould near Wick Lane, Dover.
Mrs Emmans and her husband tried to delay and confuse proceedings, discrediting the
evidence that was being provided by the camera operator, writing over 36
letters to the Central Ticket Office, and claiming that she had not been
travelling at that speed. This was her fourth appearance before
Magistrates, where she again asked for the matter to be adjourned. This
time the request was refused and the matter went to trial.
Katherine Barrett, Communications Officer for the Kent & Medway Safety Camera
Partnership said “Safety cameras are there as a casualty reduction
measure and are installed where there is history of people being killed or
seriously injured. We put the black and white signs up and make the vans
visible to give people as much of a chance as possible to make sure they are
within the speed limit. This type of case is just a waste of everyone’s
time, including the camera operator who had to spend hours in court rather than
being out on the roads. We hope this type of outcome will deter other
motorists from trying to do the same.”
